Given the number of Christian denominations in the world, and the division that is evident in the church, which the Bible calls “the body of Christ,” it’s understandable that non-Christians can become confused and even disillusioned with the Church. If you haven’t heard of a particular Church before, you may wonder what the difference is between it and the all the others.

The Canadian Reformed Churches trace their roots back to the Protestant Reformation of the Sixteenth Century; we are known as a “reformed” church. During the great reformation, God raised up messengers for himself who worked to bring the Christian Church back to its Biblical roots. Our faith is firmly rooted in Scripture, the Word of God, where God has revealed himself to humanity. We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and we believe that the message of the Bible, while rooted in real history, is timeless. God did not mean for the message of His Word to be shaped by our culture; instead, our message is meant to shape the culture in which we live.

We believe that Jesus Christ, as He Himself claimed, is the way, the truth, and the life.

We believe that no one comes to the Father except by Him.

We believe that all people have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and that everyone is called to faith in Jesus Christ.

And we believe this not because we think we are superior to everyone else, but because God has revealed these things in His Word.

We believe that this message should not be compromised, watered down, or softened in order to attract people to the church. The message of the Church has always been profoundly counter-cultural; it has never been a message that appeals to people who trust in their own wisdom instead of in God’s revelation of Himself in His word.

In his first letter to the church of Corinth, the Apostle Paul wrote that, “the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’ Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength” (1 Corinthians 1:18-25).

This is the message that, by the grace of God, we have been called to bring to the world, and we trust that the foolishness of God is indeed wiser than our wisdom, and that His weakness is indeed stronger than our strength!
